Have you decided to go Grain-Free? Well you’ve come to the right place!

Tell me, what is a grain-free diet?

A grain-free diet is focused on eliminating all grain and grain products, including wheat, barley, rye, oats, dried corn, and rice. Other than grain/grain products, there are no other restrictions for what you can eat!

But…why go grain-free?

Some common reasons as to why someone would consider switching to a grain-free diet include:

  • A grain-free diet may promote weight loss - grain products are usually highly refined and processed. Focusing on a less processed, more natural, whole foods diet can help you lose weight.
  • You may improve your mental fog by going grain-free - some people have reported that they have more clarity, mental awareness, and overall energy by cutting out grains!
  • A grain-free diet can improve a leaky gut - those that suffer from Irritable Bowel disorders like Celiac disease, or a “leaky gut” may experience relief of their symptoms by following a grain-free diet.
  • By going grain-free, you may be able to improve your mental health - gluten (often found in grain products), resembles brain substances that support our mental health. If your body can’t tolerate gluten, it will create antibodies and attack all substances that resemble gluten, which can affect your mental health. Interestingly, those with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism have high antibody levels for gluten, even though they have not been diagnosed with gluten intolerance.
  • A grain-free diet may help control your blood sugar - grains contain high amounts of sugar, and grain products are often refined and low in fibre. This can then cause your blood sugar level to spike.
  • Finally, going grain-free may help reduce pain - when your body can’t tolerate grains, it can cause inflammation. The inflammation can then spread throughout your body and cause pains, like joint pain and migraines.

So how do you follow a grain-free diet plan?

While on a grain-free diet, there are certain foods that should be avoided!

The foods that you shouldn’t eat include: Wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn, rice, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, bulgur, sorghum, and any additives made from these (brans, starches, germs).

Then what can I eat on a grain-free diet?

Some great grain-free alternatives include: Cassava, coconut, tigernut (not a nut!), all tree nuts/seeds; almonds, brazil nuts, canola, cashews, chia, coffee, cocoa, chestnuts, flax, hazelnuts, hemp, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, pumpkin, safflower, sesame, sunflower, walnuts, beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, peanuts, soy and any products made by these ingredients.
