Throughout Asia, black rice is among the rarest and most exclusive grains, historically reserved for royalty, emperors and deities. The reason is likely due to perceived health benefits. Forbidden Rice contains antioxidants called anthocyanins that give black rice and other foods, like blueberries and açaí, their blue-black color, but rice has more fiber and no sugar.

Prized for its deep purple color and roasted nutty taste, the black rice in our Forbidden Rice® microwaveable bowls is produced through Lotus Foods’ partnership with family rice farmers who cultivate rice on the volcanic soils of West Java, Indonesia. These fertile soils are rich in minerals and micronutrients so often lacking in modern diets.

Farmers use More Crop Per Drop™ growing methods, also known as the System of Rice Intensification or SRI. This set of practices enables farmers to grow more rice with less water, seed and labor, especially less labor for women. Because their rice paddies are not permanently flooded, there is little or no emission of methane, a major greenhouse gas that warms the earth. Lotus Foods is the first and only US company to date to work with SRI farmers to help them market their more sustainably grown, high-quality traditional rice.
